My First Ever Testimony in Christ
I’ve always felt a bit different from my other Christian friends.
That’s because I don’t have a Christian family. I’m the only Christian in mine.
Despite this, my mum always sent my brothers and me to Sunday school (where kids our age learn about Jesus, His creation, why He is so great, etc.) until I was 12. She probably wanted us to learn some good values, lol.
As a young kid, you don’t have much of an idea who Jesus is. The only thing you really know is that you’re a Christian – that’s pretty much your identity.
However, there’s an age limit for Sunday school. You were kind of 'disqualified' once you hit 13, apparently 'grown up' enough for Sunday school to say goodbye.
Back then, we didn’t have youth Sunday school specifically for teenagers, we joined the adults’ Sunday service, where we’d listen to the sermon with all the uncles and aunties.
You can imagine, I didn’t understand a single sentence of what the Pastor was preaching. I was too young to grasp the meaning, so I stopped going to church.
On and off, Ying, my childhood Christian friend, would invite me to their youth fellowship, but I was too shy to mingle, facing all the gor gor and jie jie (I was 13, and they were like 15, 16 or 17).
I didn’t consistently join any church activities.
Until… this youth camp.

It was a 3D2N youth camp. I can’t recall how I got invited, but the next thing I knew, I was there.

(Ikr, so freaking young...)
We had groups, different station games, a morning devotion session (which I didn’t quite understand back then), sharing from the pastor, and a praise and worship night - this was where the Christians held a kind of live song session, but all the songs were about Jesus, praising how great He is and His wonderful deeds.
During the praise and worship night, I was touched by the Holy Spirit.
I cried non-stop when they were singing this song.
The chorus lyrics were:
Lord Holy Spirit, descend with great power and change me;
I am willing to live wholeheartedly for You.
Lord Holy Spirit, descend with great power and renew me;
I am willing to live my whole life for You, please fill me.
And the tears just kept flowing down (at one point I wasn’t even sure why), and I experienced a warmth inside my body. I was very touched by what the lyrics said.
I knew it was the Holy Spirit. That night completely changed my life. I was 14.
Since then, I've always been seen in Church. I was so fired up to serve God when I was 15, and that passion continues even now. Through serving, I slowly learned who God is, why Him... all the 'whys' you could possibly question.
I couldn't have imagined a life without Jesus, especially during the hardships, the downhills, and the broken moments. And the family I've found in Christ makes every phase of my life truly worthwhile.
Jesus said, 'I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.' (John 14:6)
The truth is, no one can get to Heaven without believing that Jesus is the Son of God, died for our sins (which we're born into), rose in three days, and sits eternally at the right hand of God. Honouring Good Friday today, we remember the very reason He died for us.
Until my next testimony,
Elaine
